The association of the German journalists (DJV) confers the prize for the print freedom on Mark Travaglio

Seven members of the federal guiding advice of the DJV, the association of the German journalists, this year have assigned the prize for the print freedom to the journalist and Italian author Mark Travaglio.

Michael Konken, federal president of the DJV, has justified the decision declaring: "Assegnamo the prize to Mark Travaglio, a colleague who has been characterised for the critical courage and the engagement demonstrated in fighting for the print freedom in Italy.

I torment that it has been able to denounce in public the attempts of the Italian politicians, particularly of Silvio Berlusconi, of influencing the work of the mass media and of hindering the development of a critical journalism. The Travaglio criticism has been orientated also to the Italian colleagues with the reason of encouraged them not to be subjected to the censure. “The prize of the DJV for the print freedom is the recognition fittest for Mark Travaglio,” Konken has declared. “I worry it must give courage to the Italian journalists in order that they could unwind their supervision function and do not fall intimidation victim”. “Il premio della DJV per la libertà di stampa è il riconoscimento più adatto a Marco Travaglio,” ha dichiarato Konken. “Travaglio deve dare coraggio ai giornalisti italiani affinché possano svolgere la loro funzione di vigilanza e non cadano vittima di intimidazioni”.

The prize of the DJV for the print freedom consists in 7.500 Euro and it will be conferred on Mark Travaglio on Berlin to 18:30 in April 28 2009 close to the Palace of the Bundespressekonferenz (office prints federally). The representatives of the mass media are invited to participate in the ceremony.

With this prize the DJV it honours personality or institutions that devote themselves to first person in battles for the maintenance and the creation of the freedom of print. The preceding winners have been the journalist Serbian Miroslav Filipovic, the Russian journalist Olga Kitowa and the drafting of the newspaper “Berliner Zeitung“. Filipovic has received the prize to have discovered the war crimes it puts aside in Kosovo, Kitowa is awarded for his difficult battle against the corruption in Russia and the drafting of "Berliner Zeitung" for the engagement demonstrated in defending the print freedom in Germany and the publishing independence from Mecom Group, the house editrice that has noticed her.
